Manufacturing in America by the Numbers - Remke

We all know that U.S. manufacturing suffered many setbacks during the recession.  But it is rebounding strongly and leads the ongoing economic recovery in our country.  Here are some impressive statistics that showcase the breadth and scale of American manufacturing.

MADE IN THE U.S.A.

  • $1.84 Trillion………..amount of value added by manufacturing to the US economy in 2011
  • $50.9 Billion…………value of manufacturing contract work in 2012
  • 12.2%……….percentage of US gross domestic product (GDP) contributed by manufacturing in 2011
  • 12 Million………number of works employed directly by the various manufacturing industries as of June 2012 – representing 9% of the U.S. workforce
  • 17 Million……….number of jobs supported by the manufacturing industry – roughly one out of six private sector jobs
  • 308,000………number of job openings in manufacturing as of June 2012
  • $540 Billion………total annual payroll for manufacturing employees in 2010
  • $77,186…………average annual earnings by an American manufacturing worker in 2010
  • 19.4%……..percentage of global manufactured goods that are produced in the U.S.
  • $1.48 Trillion…………total value of goods exported from the U.S. in 2011
  • 57%………..percentage of U.S. exports derived from the manufacturing sector
  • 9th………..ranking among the world’s largest economies if U.S. manufacturing were its own country
  • $42.5 Billion…………value of purchased fuels used by the manufacturing sector in 2010
  • 44%…………percentage of total manufacturing GDP represented by four industries – food, chemicals, consumer/electronic products, and fabricated metal products
  • $2.76 Trillion……..total value of materials used in manufacturing in 2010
  • 6.9%……….unemployment rate in the manufacturing sector
  • 15 Billion………number of production hours worked in 2010

October 5th was the first annual National Manufacturing Day.  I had never heard of this – had you?  Hopefully in years to come U.S. Manufacturing will be celebrated every October 5th for what it contributes to the United States of America.  Please spread the word!
